Add a WooCommerce Gift Message

In the US, 51% of Gen Z and 46% of millennial shoppers say they’re more likely to buy a personalized gift than they were a year ago. It makes sense: with so many mass-produced gifts and trinkets, taking the time to personalize a gift can make it genuinely special for someone.

However, if you want to offer that option in your WooCommerce store, you’ll be unpleasantly surprised that it has no gift message field of its own. So most store owners improvise, by repurposing the order-notes box, or bolting on a field that breaks the block-based checkout and never reaches the packing slip.

Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be messy. You just need to decide on these 3 things: where the message field lives, which method you use to add it, and how much control you need over fees and character limits.

We’ll start with placement, since that choice shapes everything after it.

Where to put the gift message field

WooCommerce gives you 2 natural homes for it, and they behave very differently under the hood.

  1. A field on the product page attaches the message to that specific item, saved as item meta. Someone ordering 3 gifts can write a separate note for each one, and every message travels with its own product through the cart, the order, and the confirmation emails.
  2. A field on the checkout page works the other way around. It adds a single message to the whole order, stored as order meta. There’s less to configure, but you lose the per-item detail: every order carries one note, no matter how many gifts it holds.

So which fits your store? It usually comes down to whether an order tends to hold 1 gift or several:

  • Product-page placement suits florists, bakeries, and gift shops, where each item is its own present going to its own recipient.
  • Checkout-page placement suits B2B stores and single-recipient orders, like a gift basket sent to a single customer, where one note covers the lot.

If you sell the kind of products people buy in batches for different people, product-page placement is almost always the right call, and it’s the setup the rest of this guide focuses on.

How WooCommerce gift message plugins compare

These 5 plugins come up again and again for gift messages, and they split cleanly by where the field lives. Here’s how they stack up on the things that actually decide it.

Advanced Product Fields

Advanced Product Fields

Advanced Product Fields is a Studio Wombat plugin, and it’s the most complete way to put a gift message on the product page. The note saves to item meta and follows its item through to the cart, order, and emails, and the plugin scales from a plain note to a priced, conditional, gift-only field while staying lightweight.

Main features:

  • Text-area gift message field placed directly on the product page
  • Conditional logic to show the field only when a customer wants it
  • Flat, percentage, character-count, and formula pricing on the field (Pro)
  • Per-variation fields and cart-row editing (Pro)

Pricing: Free version available; Pro from $69/yr or $189 for a lifetime license.

Advanced Product Fields is best for stores that want to do far more than adding a single note: turning products into fully configurable, personalized offerings with image swatches, file uploads, date pickers, and pricing that reacts to every choice a customer makes.

Flexible Product Fields

Flexible Product Fields homepage

Flexible Product Fields by WP Desk is a product-page field builder that adds custom fields to your products and uses conditional logic to determine when each field appears.

Main features:

  • Text and text-area fields on the product page in the free version
  • Conditional logic to control when a field appears
  • Per-variation fields with extra pricing (Pro)
  • Fields carried through to the cart, order, and emails

Pricing: Free; paid Pro $59/year.

Best for: Stores that need a handful of straightforward add-on fields and control over how they sit on the product page, without building a full product configurator.

Product Add-Ons

Product Add-Ons for WooCommerce product page

Product Add-Ons for WooCommerce is the official first-party extension for product options, covering gift messages, checkboxes, and custom inputs.

Main features:

  • Text, dropdown, checkbox, and image-based add-on fields
  • Flat and percentage fees on options
  • Full support for the block-based cart and checkout
  • HPOS compatible

Pricing: $79/year, with no free tier.

Best for: Stores already standardized on first-party Woo extensions, though reviewers flag limited file-upload controls.

Gift Wrapper for WooCommerce

Gift Wrapper Plus homepage

WebFactory’s approach treats gift wrapping as a WooCommerce product and lets customers attach an optional note alongside it on the cart and checkout.

Main features:

  • Optional gift-note text area tied to a wrap option
  • Wrap set up as a real product, so it can be inventoried, taxed, and discounted
  • Slide-down, checkbox, or modal display on cart and checkout
  • Per-product wrap options on product pages (PRO)

Pricing: Free; Pro from $49/year or $89 lifetime (1 site).

Best for: Stores selling gift wrapping where the note rides along with the wrap. Classic checkout only, it isn’t compatible with the block-based checkout.

Checkout Field Editor for WooCommerce

Checkout Field Editor for WooCommerce homepage

Checkout Field Editor for WooCommerce adds your message field to the order as order meta rather than to individual items.

Main features:

  • A text field (and 20+ other types) on the classic checkout, free
  • Text, select, radio, and checkbox fields on the block checkout
  • Field validation and drag-and-drop reordering
  • Show or hide custom fields in emails and order details

Pricing: Free; Pro starting from $49/yr.

Best for: Single-recipient or B2B orders that need one note per order, not one per item.

Set up a gift message field with Advanced Product Fields

With Advanced Product Fields installed, a basic gift message is a quick job. You’re adding one text-area field to the product.

  1. On the product you want to offer a note on, scroll to the Product data panel and open Custom fields → Add field.Add new product field
  2. Set the field type to Text area so customers get a multi-line box, then give it a clear Label: “Gift message” does the job.Add new Text Area field with a label that says “Gift message”
  3. Add Placeholder text to prompt them, like “Write your gift note here,” and leave Required switched off if the note is optional.Adding a placeholder text and enabling the “Required” toggle for a field
  4. Save the product and preview it. The message box now sits on the product page, ready for you to fill in.Previewing the product field on the product page

By default, whatever the customer types travels the full path: Product page → Cart → Checkout → the order in your admin → the confirmation emails. It appears under the line item on the order screen, so whoever packs the order sees the note with no extra setup.

To let customers fix a typo after adding to the cart, turn on the Edit cart feature under WooCommerce → Settings → Product fields (Pro).

Enabling product editing from the cart

Each cart row then gets an edit link back to its note.

Edit button next to a product in the cart

That’s the whole setup for a plain note. Most stores want a bit more control, though: a fee for the service, a box that only appears for gifts, or limits on which products show it. That’s next.

Add fees, conditional logic, and category rules

Once the basic field works, APF Pro is where you shape it to your store, with 3 settings that cover the questions store owners ask most.

Charge a fee for gift messages

APF Pro lets a text-area field adjust the product price, with 3 pricing modes in the field’s Pricing section:

  • Flat fee: A set charge like $5, which is ideal for a “gift wrapping with note” upsell.
  • Percentage of the product price: Scales the fee with the value of the item.
  • Per-character: Bills by message length, which suits engraving and personalized stationery.

All of these options can be quantity-based, meaning they are repeated depending on the total number of products added to the cart. If customers want to get a pair of socks with a card and a hat with a different gift message, they can do so and will be charged separately for both additions.

APF’s different field pricing models listed

Pick the mode that matches the work: a flat fee for a service, or per-character when longer messages cost you more to produce. The price updates live on the product page as the customer types, so nothing surprises them at checkout.

Show the field only for gift orders

Not every order is a gift, and a permanent message box clutters the page for everyone who doesn’t need it. The fix is a quick piece of conditional logic:

  1. Add a True/false field above the message box and label it “This is a gift.”Adding a True/False field
  2. Open the text area’s conditional rules and set it to show only when that checkbox is ticked.Adding conditional logic to a product field

Now the box stays hidden until a customer flags the order as a gift. You can reuse the same trick for a wrapping dropdown or a delivery-date field, revealing each one only when it’s relevant. Our conditional logic guide walks through it step by step.

Restrict by product, category, or character count

Two more controls decide where the field shows and how long the note can run:

  • Assign the field group to specific products or whole categories under WooCommerce → Product fields, so only your gift range shows the box.Restricting a product field group to a specific product category
  • Set a Maximum length on the text area. Cap it at 100 or 200 characters so notes always fit your packing slips.Setting the maximum length of 100 characters for the text area field

Selling variable products? APF’s per-variation setup lets you attach a different field to each variation, so the note can appear on some options and not others. Together, these settings keep the gift message exactly where it belongs, which is really the whole decision in miniature.

Choose the right gift message setup for your store

It comes down to 3 decisions, in order.

  • Placement first: Product-page fields give you a note per item, checkout fields give you 1 note per order – so let your decision be influenced by how your customers actually buy.
  • Plugin second: Match it to that placement and to whether you need a free option or block-checkout support.
  • Configuration depth third: How far you need to go with fees, conditional logic, or category rules.

For product-page placement with all 3 layers in a single plugin – conditional logic, pricing, and variable-product support – Advanced Product Fields by Studio Wombat covers the full chain, from a plain note to a paid, gift-only field.

Common WooCommerce gift message questions

Does the gift message work with WooCommerce Blocks and HPOS?

Yes, for the setup in this guide it does. Advanced Product Fields has HPOS compatibility and works with the block-based checkout, so a note added on the product page stores and displays correctly on a modern store. Among the alternatives, Product Add-Ons covers both as well, while Gift Wrapper supports HPOS but stays on the classic checkout only.

What about variable products?

Advanced Product Fields Pro and Flexible Product Fields Pro both let you attach fields at the variation level, so a gift message can appear on some variations and not others. On the free tiers, you’re working with simple products only.

Will the message reach my Printify or Printful order?

Not automatically. No WooCommerce gift-message plugin pushes a custom field through to a print-on-demand partner’s fulfillment. Printify’s own gift message feature covers Etsy orders and manual orders, so the workaround is to add the note to a manual Printify order or copy it into an order note before you fulfill.

Can I add a gift message without a plugin?

You can, but it means custom code: hooking a field onto the product form (for example via woocommerce_before_add_to_cart_button) and saving it to order meta yourself. It’s doable for a developer, but easy to get wrong across cart, checkout, and emails, which is why most stores opt for a tested plugin instead.
