How to Sell Custom Jewelry with WooCommerce

Are you using WooCommerce and interested in selling custom jewelry but not sure how to start?

While there are many benefits to selling custom jewelry online, it is a challenging business due to factors like high pricing points, potential returns, exchange limitations, and customization complexities, among other things.

In this guide, we will explore the advantages of selling custom jewelry and address the challenges you are likely to encounter.

We will also show you how to set up a customizable product page to sell custom jewelry on a WooCommerce website.

Let’s get started!

Benefits & challenges of selling custom jewelry online

The major benefits of selling custom jewelry online are:

  • Global reach: Selling items online allows you to draw customers from different states and countries, expanding your customer base beyond geographical limitations.
  • Higher profit margins: Custom jewelry often commands higher prices due to its exclusive nature.
  • Loyal customers: Crafting custom pieces fosters a deeper connection with your customers, which cultivates a sense of loyalty and helps future-proof your business.

The primary challenges of selling custom jewelry online are:

  • Price determination: Considering material costs, labor, and design complexities, setting appropriate pricing for custom pieces can be difficult.
  • Quality assurance: Ensuring the quality of custom jewelry without physical inspection can be challenging.
  • Returns & exchanges: Managing returns and exchanges for custom pieces is complex, as each item is uniquely crafted and tailored to individual preferences.

Now that we have seen some of the possibilities that selling custom jewelry offers, as well as some things to be mindful of, let’s start building a custom jewelry product page.

Step-by-step guide: How to sell custom jewelry online

In this tutorial, we are using the following software to sell custom jewelry online:

  • WooCommerce: With the free WooCommerce software you can convert a simple WordPress website into a store.
  • Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce: We built this premium plugin so you can add extra options to your products, like custom fields, text boxes, dropdowns, swatches, images, and more.
  • Live Content Preview: Another premium plugin we built to allow previewing products so you can see how they would appear to the store customer.

Below, we have covered the steps you need to implement to use those tools to start selling custom jewelry online. For this tutorial, we assume you have a WooCommerce store up and running.

Step 1: Add a jewelry item

Start by adding a jewelry item to your WooCommerce store.

IMPORTANT: We are going to add a ring to our demo website. Going forward, we will use the ring to demonstrate how to sell custom jewelry on a WooCommerce store.

There will be two variations of the ring: gold and silver. The rings will be customizable, meaning that we will allow customers to add initials to be engraved on the ring.

Two variations in a WooCommerce store

To add a jewelry item to your WooCommerce store, open your WordPress dashboard and go to Products → Add New

Then proceed to add a name to the products, add a product description, and scroll down to the Product Data section.

Be sure that the product type is chosen as a Simple Product, then proceed to add an appropriate price to the jewelry item.

Next, we recommend diving into the Inventory, Shipping, Linked Products, Attributes, and Advanced tabs and making modifications wherever necessary. To learn what each tab contributes to the product page and how to modify each, you can take a look at this guide

Product tabs in Advanced Product Fields

After you have made modifications in the Product Data section, scroll up to the Product Image section and add a product image. To add multiple images, go to the Product Gallery section. Use this help doc for assistance.

On our demo site, we have added a featured image in the Product Image and two images of the rings we plan to sell in the Gallery

Adding product images to the product gallery

After adding the images, be sure to assign a category to the product.

When you are done, scroll up to the top of the page and hit the Save Draft button without fail.

Step 2: Install & activate the Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce plugin

To allow customers to order personalized jewelry items, you need the Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce plugin. This premium plugin comes at an annual cost of $69 for a single-website license.

First, you must purchase the plugin, install it on your website, and activate the license key

Then, you can proceed to add custom fields. More on that in the next section.

Step 3: Add custom fields

In step 2, we explained how to add a jewelry item to your WooCommerce store. In this step, we will show you how to convert it into an item that you can personalize.

We have added a ring to our demo site. In this step, we will convert it into a personalized item where customers can add engraving to the product.

  1. Open the product page where you added the jewelry item.
  1. Scroll down to the Product Data section, where you should see a new tab called Custom Fields. Select that and hit the Add Your First Field button. Adding a custom field with Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce
  1. To sell custom jewelry, you need to add two custom fields.

a) “Image Swatches” custom field

  • Proceed to add Image Swatches as the Field Type. This will allow you to add multiple images so that you can offer customers the choice to select between gold or silver rings.
  • Next, add a name to the custom field in the Label option. This is the text customers will see on the front end of the product page. Adding image swatches and naming the label in APF
  • Now, scroll down to Options and hit the Add Option button. Then proceed to add images and labels, as we have done in the image below. Adding image swatches in the Options section of APF
  • Once done, minimize the field by selecting the top bar in the custom field. Minimizing a custom field in APF

b) “Text” custom field

  • Hit the Add a Field button to create another custom field.
  • This time use Text as the field type. And, don’t forget to add a name (we added “Engrave Initials”) to the custom field in the Label option.
  • You can scroll down and add minimum or maximum character lengths and a placeholder text, among other things. We recommend reviewing the options available. Adding minimum or maximum character lengths and/or a placeholder text with APF

Here’s how both custom fields look on our demo website:

IMPORTANT: After creating the two custom fields, make sure to scroll up and hit the Save Draft button to save the custom fields you have just created on the product page.

Step 4: Define how to swap images

In the previous section, you created a custom field for image swatches where you added two variations (gold and silver) for the ring.

In this section, you will be defining which images to show when customers are clicking on a particular variation of the ring. This means that you will be ensuring the gold rings are shown when customers select “Gold” and silver rings are shown when customers select the “Silver” option on the product page.

Here’s how to do that:

  • Go to Product Data → Custom Fields, enable the Change Product Image option by toggling on the adjacent button, and make sure the “According to a Combination of Option Values” is selected from the dropdown menu.
  • Next, hit the Add New button. Applying the correct product image to the customer's selection
  • Immediately, a dropdown menu will appear along with the two images of the gold and silver ring that you uploaded in Step 2 in the product gallery.
  • Select “Gold” from the dropdown menu, and click on the golden ring image. This ensures that when customers click on the Gold option on the product page, the image of the golden ring is shown.
  • Hit the Add New button again and select “Silver,” along with the silver ring image. Adding the corresponding image to the selected product option in APF
  • Scroll up to the top of the page and hit the Save Draft button to save the modifications you just made.

Now, if you click the Preview button located beside the Save Draft button, the product page will open on a different tab. And it should look like this:

Try clicking on the gold or silver option, and the image on the left of the screen will change to the corresponding gold and silver rings.

Step 5: Live preview the customization

When customers add the initials they would like to have engraved on the ring, it is incredibly helpful to show them how engraving would look on the ring.

To live preview the engraving, you need to install the Live Content Preview add-on. It has been specifically built to work with the Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce plugin and comes at an annual cost of $49 for a single-website license.

Purchase the add-on, install and activate it on your WooCommerce store.

Next, on the jewelry item product page, go to the Custom Field tab, scroll down to the Live Content Preview section, and hit the Add New button.

Adding a new product to the live preview with APF

You will be asked to select the image on which you want the engravings to appear.

Selecting an image for the live preview in APF

Next, select the field in which you will insert the engraving.

Selecting a field for the live preview image in APF

In the final step, you can select the font, color, size, placement, height, and other elements of the text engraving.

But first, use your cursor to create a rectangular box on the image of the ring. Then use the Rotate option to locate the box properly on the ring.

We recommend proceeding with the default options (for font, color, size, etc.) and making modifications only after you have checked how the live preview looks on the front end.

Hit the Done button when you are ready.

Customizing the live preview image in APF

To live preview the customization, go to the front end of the product page by hitting the Preview button. Then write something in the “Engrave Initials” box. The text should appear on the ring image located on the left side of the screen.

At this point, the live preview appears only on the gold ring.

To add a live preview to the silver ring, you need to go to the Live Content Preview section, hit the Add New button, and carry out the same steps. Just remember to select the silver ring image instead of the gold ring image.

That’s it, folks! You now have a custom jewelry product page up and running on your WooCommerce store.

Wrapping up

Selling custom jewelry with WooCommerce offers many benefits but also poses some challenges. One of the biggest challenges is to set up the product page. Ideally, you want customers to add customizations to the jewelry item.

Since WooCommerce does not offer an out-of-box solution, you need a third-party plugin like Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce.

Besides the APF plugin, we also recommend using the Live Content Preview add-on, which allows customers to live preview any customizations they are making on the product.

Setting up these two plugins is a straightforward process (thanks to this tutorial!) that will make a substantial difference.
